The property “Ratan Haveli” which was then more than 100 years old, was purchased by the present owners Seth Chandulalji and Gordhandasji in July 1936 for a mere Rs.649 ‘Kaldars’. It was a two storey building when purchased in 1936 .The ‘haveli’ was bought from Pandit Jaikishan s/o Atmaramji a Maharashtrian Brahmin whose ancestors were most likely its original owners and constructed this haveli at the time of founding of the city of Jaipur in 1727.
Brahampuri or ‘holy abode’ is the oldest section of Jaipur City. In 1727 when the ruling family shifted its capital from Amber to Jaipur; they did so with great pomp and religious ceremony. The then King, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of Jaipur, invited Brahmins and scholars from across the country to perform ‘yagyas’ to sanctify the new capital. Brahampuri was thus the colony gifted by the king to the Pundits.
Each ‘haveli’ was built simply yet perfectly in accordance to the laws of ‘vastushastra’. Each had its own temple, courtyards, open wells and granaries.
